Diagnosing Turbulence in the Neutral and Molecular Interstellar Medium of Galaxies

چکیده
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is a crucial component of the current paradigms star formation, dynamo theory, particle transport, magnetic reconnection, and evolution structure in interstellar medium (ISM) galaxies. Despite importance to astrophysical fluids, full theoretical framework based on solutions Navier–Stokes equations remains intractable. Observations provide only limited line-of-sight information densities, temperatures, velocities, field strengths, therefore directly measuring ISM challenging. A statistical approach has been great utility allowing comparisons observations, simulations, analytic predictions. In this review article, we address growing MHD many fields astrophysics diagnostics for studying interplanetary turbulence. particular, will machine learning algorithms that have developed observational data sets order obtain about cascade, fluid compressibility (sonic Mach number), magnetization (Alfvénic number). The interstellar medium of the Antennae Galaxies
To study the properties of the interstellar medium in the prototypical merging system of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039), we have obtained 12 CO (1–0), (2–1) and (3–2) line maps, as well as a map of the 870µm continuum emission. Our results are analysed in conjunction with data from X-ray to radio wavelengths. In order to distinguish between exact coincidence and merely close corr...
متن کاملAstrophysical Fractals: Interstellar Medium and Galaxies
The interstellar medium is structured as a hierachy of gas clouds, that looks selfsimilar over 6 orders of magnitude in scales and 9 in masses. This is one of the more extended fractal in the Universe. At even larger scales, the ensemble of galaxies looks also self-similar over a certain ranges of scales, but more limited, may be over 3-4 orders of magnitude in scales. These two fractals appear...
متن کاملAnisotropic fluid turbulence in the interstellar medium and solar wind
The interstellar medium and solar wind is permeated by a magnetic field that renders magnetohydrodynamic turbulence anisotropic. In the classic work of Iroshnikov @Astron. Zh. 40, 742 ~1963!# and Kraichnan @Phys. Fluids 8, 1385 ~1965!#, it is assumed that the turbulence is isotropic, and an inertial range energy spectrum that scales as k is deduced based on the nonlinear interaction of Alfvén w...
متن کاملMHD Turbulence in Star-Forming Regions and the Interstellar Medium
MHD turbulence plays a central role in the physics of star-forming molecular clouds and the interstellar medium. I here show that MHD turbulence in molecular clouds must be driven to account for the observed supersonic motions in the clouds, as even strongly magnetized turbulence decays quickly. I then show that driven MHD turbulence can globally support gravitationally unstable regions, but lo...
متن کاملThermal Phases of the Interstellar Medium in Galaxies
This review deals with the theory of multiphase media in astrophysical systems. I discuss the basic reasons for the existence of multiple thermal phases, and the fundamental connection between multiphase media and thermal instability. After describing important examples of multiphase media, I examine the interactions among phases, i.e., mass exchange driven by thermal conduction and hydrodynami...
